The Best Things To Do In London In Summer 2019
It's finally here! The wettest, most humid and unpredictable season is upon us. It's British summertime! And where better to experience Britain's eternal battle between rain and sun than our fair capital? London has so much to do and see, so if it all feels a little overwhelming then don't fret. Whether you're a resident or just visiting, here are some of the best things to do in London in Summer 2019. And because we're just lovely, we've put them all in chronological order. You are very welcome.
Kew Gardens
One hundred and thirty-two hectares of horticultural bliss await you at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew. While they're open all year round, there's nothing like taking a stroll around over 60,000 plants with the sun shining down on you. There's plenty more to do and see. Say hello to the world's oldest potted plant (placed way back in the 18th Century), walk across the treetop walkway that towers nearly 20 feet above the ground, and explore ten different climate zones in the Prince of Wales conservatories. There are cafes if you need refreshments, or a pub by the tube station if you fancy something stronger.
Globe Theatre
Take a trip into the past while visiting the Globe Theatre. It's a faithful recreation of the very place William Shakespeare wrote some of the most famous stories still told. It's also open-air, so it will make a great day out if you can dodge Britain's patchy summer weather. You can catch a show that's entirely authentic for the time; no mics, no lights, and music from period-specific instruments only, or take a tour of the building to learn more about its rich history.
Greenwich and Docklands International Festival
If you fancy something a little different this summer, why not take a wander down to the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival? It's free to get in, and you'll have the chance to see all manner of performances from slapstick comedy to acrobatics. Lots of it takes place outdoors, so it's worth checking out if the weather keeps up. The festival runs from the 21st June through to 6th July.
London Bicycle Tour
Make the most of the weather, and explore London on two wheels by taking a London Bicycle Tour. You can take a Classic Tour, with a tour guide who will take you past some of London's most famous landmarks like Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Westminster Abbey. Or take the Love London Tour, a cultural journey through the West End, China Town, and other renowned locations in the heart of the capital.
Pride in London Parade
Come on down to one of London's biggest parties on 6th July. From midday, join thousands of people on a merry march through the heart of London to celebrate diversity at the Pride of London Parade. Expect to see tonnes of rainbow flags, happy faces, and people coming together to champion equal rights. Afterwards, the party kicks off in Trafalgar Square 'til the early hours. Expect performances from some of pop's biggest LGBT+ stars, lots to eat and drink, and expect to get home pretty late.
British Summer Time
What better way to enjoy British summer time than to attend a festival called British Summer Time? Over a week's worth of performances take place in Hyde Park, where you're sure to see some of music's biggest acts - both past and present - accompanied with a considerable dollop of sunshine, and enough food and drink to satisfy anyone. This year, you can catch performances from the likes of Florence and the Machine, Barbara Streisand, and Celine Dion. So if You've Got The Love, don't Think Twice, because if you did, What Kind of Fool would you be? I'm really sorry...
Hampton Court Palace
If you're fancy some cultural relaxation at the tail-end of the summer, why not take a guided tour round Hampton Court Palace? You'll explore every corner of King Henry VIII's former home, from its famous Maze to The Great Vine vineyard, and everything in between, while also learning about the rich royal history that took place there.
Film 4 Summer Screen
Another open-air festival, this time focused on film, the Film4 Summer Screen is Somerset House's annual celebration of the moving picture. Over a fortnight, you'll have the opportunity to sit and watch brand new films, cult classics, and indie darlings you may not have even heard about. Join over 2000 punters for the cinematic event of the summer.
The Monster
Remember the days when you could run care-free around a playground, swinging on swings and climbing on monkey bars without having to worry about bills or stocking the fridge? Reliving these experiences might get you some funny looks nowadays, but never fear; The Monster is here! Take a trip up to Alexandra Palace for the world's largest inflatable obstacle course, filled to the brim with 42 obstacles for big kids to get their blood pumping. And after all that excitement, gorge on street food, wash it down with a refreshing drink and even take part in a bit of karaoke.
Curzon Cinema Soho
Why not see out the summer by catching a film at the famous Curzon Cinema in Soho? The home of independent and art house releases in the heart of Central London, it's a cinema experience you won't find anywhere else. Relax for a drink in the lavish bar, and you may even get to rub shoulders with the stars. Then take your seat, and be blown away by Dolby 5.1 surround sound, and some of the biggest and crystal-clear screens in the country.
Open House
Ever wondered what was inside some of London's most recognised buildings like the BT Tower and the Gherkin? Then Open House might be right up your street. For the past 25 years, Open House has been opening up over 800 buildings to the public, providing tours across London. Over a quarter of a million people take part every year, so why not join them this year?
Zip Wire
If you want to end summer with one final thrill, how does riding the world's fastest inner-city zip line sound? That's exactly what you and up to three of your friends could be doing at Zip Wire.
