Top 10 recommendations by local Londoners

It might be January, and it might all feel a bit gloomy and cold, but there’s always something exciting or novel to do in London. We asked some local Londoners what sorts of things they have planned over the next few weeks and what they would recommend to visitors coming to the city. From favourite local haunts, to seasonal events - read on if you’re looking for some unique things to do in London:

  1. Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Hosted in the impressive Natural History Museum, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards are back! Running from January until the end of August, you can visit the acclaimed photography and see the stunning shots taken around the world. Premiering in London before touring 60 cities, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is well worth a visit – and it deserves all the fuss!
  1. Ice Skating (again!)
You might have had enough of Christmas cheer (bah, humbug) but for those of you who haven’t, you can still get your skates on at two ice skating rinks in London. The rinks at Canary Wharf and Broadgate are both open until the end of February, so if you can’t wait until next winter, here’s your perfect chance. Plus, it might be a little warmer this time!
  1. Silent Disco
London is renowned for its nightlife and caters to every musical genre and personal taste. If you’re among the pickier types, but fancy a night out during your stay, why not try a Silent Disco? Forgo the clubs, warehouses and underground haunts dotted across the city, how about a rave in the Shard, or a dancefloor in the historic ship, Cutty Sark? With unique Silent Disco venues popping up around London for one night only, it’s up there on our must-do things to do.
  1. Greenwich Market
Most people have heard of Borough Market but one of the lesser known markets in London is Greenwich Market. Greenwich is a great place to go for a bit of quiet sanctuary from the bustling streets of London. With its quirky cobbled streets and small boutiques, it’s also home to Greenwich Market, a local haunt that’s well worth a visit. With a wide range of stalls from food and drink, to artisan and crafts, we highly recommend! Whilst you're in the area, why not visit the Royal Observatory at the same time?
  1. Man in the Moon Passage
Street names are a funny thing, and London is full of bizarre lanes, avenues and passages waiting to be discovered. Go on a tour of the rude, comical and nonsensical street names for a really unique photo album to take back home with you. Here are some of our favourites; Man in the Moon Passage by Trafalgar Square, Ha-Ha Road in Greenwich, Shoulder of Mutton Alley by Poplar and Christmas Pie Avenue in Guildford – which is technically not London but worth a mention nonetheless! 1. Yoga on the Glass Walkway
Since the opening of the new Glass Walkway, Tower Bridge is reaffirming itself as one of London's top attractions. Not only can you walk over the River Thames and look down at the passing boats and pedestrians under the bridge, but now – for a limited time only – Tower Bridge is hosting morning yoga sessions. Why not try your sun salutations at dawn on the Glass Walkway for a once in a lifetime experience. We’re booked in, so come and join us!
  1. London Mime Festival
Home to the weird and wonderful, there’s nothing that London doesn’t do! Including running the London International Mime Festival. Performing until the end of January, you can catch a diverse range of shows at multiple venues across the city from the iconic Royal Opera House, to Soho Theatre and the Southbank Centre. Open your mind to the world of mime – who knew silence could speak volumes!
  1. Robert Burns Night
On the 25th January Scots around the world celebrate this renowned poet's birthday. Why not celebrate the date whilst you’re in London at one of the ceilidhs hosted across the city, or if dancing’s not your thing, how about raising a toast instead with a tumbler of Scottish whisky. You won't be short of a bar, or two, in London to choose but we recommend the Britannia Pub in London Bridge for its impressive whisky cellar!
  1. Churchill War Rooms
This year marks fifty years since Churchill’s death. To commemorate our former Prime Minister’s commitment and accomplishments, visit the Churchill War Rooms and War Cabinets to learn about WWII, tales of espionage and discover the underground world of life in the bunkers. With an interactive gallery of photos and film clips, the museum brings to life ‘the greatest Briton’ in London during the Blitz years.
  1. Tower Twilight Tours
Discover the Tower of London after hours during a Twilight Tour, taken by the famous Yeoman Warders, aka Beefeaters. Explore the historic site and listen to the gruesome tales of betrayal and treason, as well as scandalous royal gossip. You can see some of the Tower’s most spooky sites from the Traitor’s Gate to the Bloody Tower for a true sense of what it was like to live there – both as a royal and as a prisoner....
