What’s on: in Spring

Spring might be one of the most agreeable months to visit London. The weather isn’t too cold, or too hot – though that’s not surprising – and the hordes of children on their school holidays are a few weeks away from descending upon the city. Although it’s a built up city, London has plenty of pockets to escape to as an urban oasis and calm sanctuary. To make the most of the bright and fresh season there are plenty of unique events happening all round the city, from sporting events to horticultural appreciation. Here are some of the things we’re looking forward to over the next few weeks: Annual Opening of Kew Palace, Mar 28th A visit to Kew Gardens is one of the most symbolic Spring events in London. With the annual opening of Kew Palace, nestled in the lush green Babylon of Kew Gardens in West London, head to this verdant haven and celebrate Spring surrounded by thousands of exotic flowers and plants, including a 300 acre arboretum and a classic glass Waterlily house. It’s a true escape from the busy city, perfect if you crave a bit of quiet. With the London Pass you can get free entry to Kew Gardens, making your visit all the more palatable! The BNY Mellon Boat Race, 6th April One for sport fanatics, the BNY Mellon Boat Race is one of Britain’s longest standing traditions in the world of rowing. Oxford vs Cambridge, years of rivalry boils down to this annual event, where sweat, blood and tears and shed all in the glory of their University. Head to head these streamlined boats zip down the Thames between Mortlake and Putney, where some 25,000 people come to support. Held annually since 1856, let’s see who wins this year. The stakes are high... While you’re in the area, the Southbank is one of the most vibrant areas in London. Take to the promenade and watch the street performers and stroll up to Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern if you fancy something a bit more edifying. London Marathon, 13th April Even if you’re not much of a runner, cheer on those who are at the Virgin Money London Marathon on the 13th April. Thousands of scantily clad and fancy-dressed people run the 26 mile race for charity, covering an impressive route past the Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. If you want to make a day of it, hole yourself up in one of the many traditional pubs and celebrate for them. While you’re at it, you might want to make a small donation. After all it is for a good cause. Easter Weekend, 18th-20th April Kids and grown-ups alike love Easter. Any excuse for chocolate and a bank holiday to make the most of the new season. There are plenty of parks in London, the perfect day out for a family – or friends – to make your own Easter Egg hunt. Regents Park, Hyde Park, Green Park, there are plenty of parks to choose from! If you want a bit of wildlife with your eggs, why not try Richmond Park where there are 630 red and fallow deer roaming around the green expanse. Just hope for a sunny, dry day or your spirits might be a bit dampened.
